Smoke Stack Rhino
Follow the highway east from Melbourne, Australia and you’ll find yourself in the Yarra Ranges, a mountainous, creative mecca where musicians jam until they pass out. This is beer and wine country; a place where goannas roam, kookaburras hunt tiger snakes, and the locals belt paddock bombs around the yard until the motor dies – unless you jam the carburettor open with a stick.
But forget the glossy tourist brochure. It was here, within a rusted tin-shed, that guitarist Ash King and drummer Jeremy Berg first jammed and the seed of what would become grunge-blues trio Smoke Stack Rhino was sown.
Fast forward a few years and add in funk-master Shane Andison on the bass, and the band has toured around Australia multiple times, played over 20 festivals, released their own beer and played with the likes of G Flip, KINGSWOOD, Harts, Bob Log III (USA), and 19-Twenty.
After becoming a trio in late 2018, the band locked itself away and did nothing but jam and write music for 6 months.
In July 2019 they returned to the stage with a sold-out gig at iconic Melbourne venue Cherry Bar, followed by the release of new single ‘Doom Boogie’.
Showcasing the group’s reimagination as a three-piece, the track features brooding imagery, swirling harmonica and portentous riffs, drawing the attention of triple j (Roots N All) commercial and community radio stations, bloggers and Spotify playlisters. The band embarked on a 10-date national tour in support of the track, surviving snapped guitar necks, fines for smuggling apples and audience members backflipping off stages. Good times!
